The Arctic and the European Union

måndag 30 maj, 8.00-17.00, G-Salen, Arrheniuslaboratoriet, Stockholms universitet

Welcome to the regional conference The Arctic and the European Union, organised jointly by the Embassies of France in Sweden and Finland, the Stockholm Association of International Affairs (UF), the University of Lapland and the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This project is a result of close collaboration with many partners, among others the European Environmental Agency and the European Space Agency.

If you wish to take part to the conference, please register here as soon as you can and no later than the 25th of May.

Scientists, students, policy-makers and those interested by the Arctic, especially seen through the contribution of the European Union to its sustainable development and to a better understanding of the rapid changes occurring in the North, are very welcome to participate. Overall, this conference, which started as a French initiative with the support of Institut Français (d’Alembert Fund), together with Swedish and Finnish partners, has the ambition to be a gathering place and a forum for informal exchange for all stakeholders involved or interested in the Arctic issues.

The main objectives of the conference are:

- Confronting the scientific expertise to stimulate debate and encourage new research in academia
- The development of Arctic research, based on observation networks and scientific instruments able to monitor the marine environment, biodiversity as well as possible sources of pollution that may arise from natural ressources exploitation, maritime shipping industry, etc.
- Discussing the most up-to-date solutions to climate change impacts on the Arctic regions and tools for adaptation
- Raising awareness and disseminate knowledge on global change in the Arctic and Arctic governance to a wider audience, considering, in particular, the input of several EU institutions and agencies

The conference will take place at two locations:

- 30 May, in Stockholm, to mobilize the main stakeholders, including at the political level, in the context of the forthcoming Swedish chairmanship of the Arctic Council,
- 1 June, in Rovaniemi, which consists in a rather accessible Arctic city and where the future EU’s Arctic Information Centre could be located.
Speakers and participants are highly encouraged to participate in both sessions.
