Such examples are the management of the ongoing economic crisis in the USA and Europe, the outcome of the presidential elections in almost half of the permanent members of the Security Council (SC), the consequences of the ongoing “Arab Spring”, and the extent of the tension between Iran and the other major powers.

Society has increasingly become xenophobic, and in an atmosphere of both war and monetary difficulties, it has almost become a habit to blame most of the troubles on “illegal aliens” or “terrorists”. They are apparently destroying this western society through no fault of the society itself.

One year ago it was rather impossible to even imagine that within a period of a year three Arab leaders would be taken off power mainly by their own citizens. Those three leaders ruled with an iron fist and they were preparing their relatives to inherit the leadership. The Western governments were taken largely by surprise when the Egyptian and Tunisian revolutions started (which we now know have succeeded, to some extent). They are now trying to take more advantage of the revolutions although they did not plan nor supported them initially. However, it is yet to be seen how much they will succeed in that. This opinion article summarises the outcomes and challenges of a year old ”Arab Spring”.

On 18 October 2011, 477 Palestinian prisoners would be released from the Israeli prisons in exchange with Gilad Shalit, the Israeli soldier captured by many Palestinian factions in the Gaza Strip and held for 5 years. According to the agreement, another 550 Palestinian prisoners will be released in a two months period. This is a happy day for the Palestinians and many of the Israelis, a rare situation when you see both parties happy because of an event.
