By Mohamad Zakaria

Part 1 of 3.

One year ago it was rather impossible to even imagine that within a period of a year three Arab leaders would be taken off power mainly by their own citizens. Those three leaders ruled with an iron fist and they were preparing their relatives to inherit the leadership. The Western governments were taken largely by surprise when the Egyptian and Tunisian revolutions started (which we now know have succeeded, to some extent). They are now trying to take more advantage of the revolutions although they did not plan nor supported them initially. However, it is yet to be seen how much they will succeed in that. This opinion article summarises the outcomes and challenges of a year old ”Arab Spring”.
