Student debate competition
Monday, 4 April, 4 pm – 6.30 pm
On 15 April Utrikespolitiska Föreningen (UF) and the Stockholm Institute for Public Speaking (StIPS) will organize the first UF Student Debate Competition. The contest takes place on a Friday afternoon and afterwards we will have time for mingle. All participants will receive free debate training from Ruben Brunsveld, former diplomat to the EU and founder of the StIPS. The training will take place on 4 April and food will be served.
Each participating team must consist of three persons and will be constructed during the training session. The teams must be able to attack and defend the same motions. The participants receive the motions two weeks in advance in order to prepare for the debate. However, they will not know if they are “pro” or “opposition” until the day of the debate. Each debate session will be opened by the first pro-speaker with a strict time limit of three minutes. Then the first opposition speaker will have three minutes, followed by the second pro-speaker to rebut the arguments of the opposing team. Then the opposition gets three minutes to rebut, after which both teams must present their final conclusions to convince the jury and the audience. The debating and the training class will be in English.
This is your chance to compete in the first UF Student Debate Competition. But each debate also needs an audience. So if you are unable to participate, please join us and cheer on the teams to see which rhetorical tricks they use to beat their opponents.
