Since Vladimir Putin was elected President approximately 10 years ago, Russian leadership has developed in a more authoritarian direction. On the 4th of December the next Presidential Election is taking place in a poor political climate, and the oppositional movement is facing severe difficulties in making their voices heard.

Margot Wallström is the United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary General on Sexual Violence in Conflict. In this capacity, she serves as Chair of the inter-agency network, UN Action Against Sexual Violence in Conflict (UN Action).

Perspectives on South Sudan - possibilities and needs of a new state

This winter, 99% of the people of South Sudan voted for independence which lead to a new state being born on July 9th 2011, the Republic of South Sudan. After decades of fighting and two civil wars with about 2.5 million people killed, South Sudan now proceeds from independence struggle to nation building. Will it be possible for the north and the south to reconcile over the borders and what will happen to the large oil reserves in South Sudan?
