Working with women in war

Wednesday, December 7, at 19.00, Café Bojan, Stockholm University

When discussing sexual violence in war focus is primarily on survivors and offenders. But there are other actors involved. In the short film Women’s War we make acquaintance with Esther and Mira, two women who fight for the same cause – to help raped women rebuild their life. Esther lives and works in the acute situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mira in Bosnia-Herzergovina with the scars that still remain from the war in Bosnia in the1990s. In this movie, the two women meet to share experiences and discuss how they can support each other’s organizations.

A wave of extremism in Europe

The latest development in the political landscape of Europe is rising support for right wing populist parties. Using a rhetoric with increased hate aimed at minority groups such as Muslims, Roma and homosexuals these parties have pushed the boundary of what is politically correct in many countries all around Europe and many of them are part of the political establishment. The Association of International Affairs invite you to discuss these recent developments during a speakers pub.

Water for sale

The privatization of water has led to devastating consequences for millions of people. These people have not only been deprived of a life necessity but of a human right. Large corporations set price tags on the most essential part of life, and the local population picks up the check. But is the situation really as bleak as it is usually pointed out to be or could the corporations be a much needed salvation? Fredrik Segerfeldt highlights the positive sides of water privatization.

The Return of Asia

A popular discussion as of late has been to speak of the “Rise of Asia” due to the rapid economic growth we have recently experienced in China, India and Southeast Asia. However, this is evidence of terrible historical research since “The East” has been in the center of international affairs for several millennia with the exception of period of 150 years. This is why our discussion and TEDx event will revolve around the “Return of Asia”. Join us for an evening with inspiring videos of Tedtalks and interesting discussions in an attempt to change the narrow western mindset when thinking of Asia in general and of China in particular.

Reducing Climate Risk

An expert on adaptation, Richard Klein leads Stockholm Environment Institute‘s research theme ‘Reducing Climate Risk’. His work focuses on adaptation finance and governance, vulnerability measurement as well as the role of the private sector and links between climate and development. Richard will talk to us about climate policy, in particular about the different positions between the rich and poor countries, and the lack of trust between the countries.
